IF-Haunted

The back cornfield was already a scary place after dark, but with all the talk of folk disappearing farmer Jake felt uneasy. The old farmer had heard strange noises coming from the James place across the road last night. The noises must have really spooked his neighbours, because they were gone this morning. Jake figured the family packed up and got out of town like the others. The James family left in a real hurry. They didn't even have the good sense to close the front door behind them when they left.

A noise caught Jake's attention. The old farmer could hear scratching a few rows over, it was probably just those skunks again. He lifted his rifle up to his chest, almost like a child hugs a teddy bear. The old farmer felt silly, "nothing here but skunks and a scarecrow" he muttered to himself. He laughed nervously, and stopped to look up at the scarecrow hanging in front of him. "That's the darnedest thing.. I don't remember ever putting up a scarecrow."

Happy Halloween!
